False Genres

Gay-Fiction is a false genre. It is 100% erotica for lonely gay males. I work at Barnes & Noble, and I found myself shelving the Gay-Lesbian section today. I was shelving some Books by this really well-known and old Lesbian Fiction lady when I noticed something: they were novels. Novels, as many of you are aware, have stories. The next few books I had to shelve were Gay-Fiction. At this moment came the sudden enlightenment that this section was a lie. This section contains NO novels. We know this because this section is not organized by AUTHOR, it is organized by EDITOR. Books in this section are simply compilations of short gay fantasies. Fictitious? no doubt. Stories? maybe. But its still arranged by editor. They are anthologies, surveys, devotionals if you will comprised of very very short and shallow tellings of sexual experiences that some guy made up. In any case, the section is completely filled with these hilarious books; and there are way too many of them for it to be given the more traditional title of “Fiction.” It is a lie!

If these books, however, were made to go into a more appropriate section (perhaps, Gay & Lesbian Sexuality), next to Linda’s Bedtime Stories, then Gay-Fiction would be a small area of the store indeed. Perhaps the genre needs this sort of material to expand the size of the section and thus make it appear more important.

This may be shameful, but then again, everyone does it. Indeed, simply walk 20 ft. to ONE the nearby FOUR Christainity sections and note that these sections are guilty of the same act. Except these books are perhaps worse, for the only other possible section for them would be one entitled Utter Crap.

The biggest enlightenment of all is not the shallowness of men or our lack of nack for writing engaging romantic stories. Rather, I became very aware of the difference between a man and a woman. They are different, special, and perfect in God’s eyes. A man and a woman may be wired differently sexually, but they are also woven together in very beautifully unique ways.
